What do we know about its origins?
The legend behind this dish tells us that this imposing delicacy originated and was prepared for Persian kings; cooked on a metal rod, and sliced with swords. It was served with bread. Years later, Iranians consumed it annually during the Persian New Year.
Although its origin story is brief, it is one of the few dishes with a defined origin, as many Middle Eastern dishes are very old and their exact birthplace is unknown.
Likewise, Shawarma arrived in Europe in 1972, where it is known as kebab; when Kadir Nurman, a Turk who emigrated to Germany, opened a fast-food stand in a busy area.
From there, it began to gain popularity in European countries, becoming one of the main German dishes along with sausages. Since 1972, Shawarma has spread throughout Europe and other continents.
Curiosities
The preparation method is a distinctive feature of this dish, as the meat is sliced from a vertically rotating spit, which turns slowly while being cut into thin pieces by the person preparing this delicious dish.
There are two versions of Shawarma: one can be described as a roll of vegetables and meat, while the second is a pita bread with an opening on top; inside, it contains the filling, and you can order another if you desire.
Due to the religious beliefs of Muslims, Shawarma in this place cannot contain pork, so it is only prepared with lamb, which is very different from other countries where various types of meat are used.
